Halo novels

So there's a wide variety of novels set in the Halo universe, but are any of them actually good? I mean, I know that novels set in pre-existing game universe aren't always great, so I'm not exactly expecting miracles here, but what ones in particular stand up as paragons of decent to good storytelling?

And are they considered canon at all?
